Shipwrecked... or why I love Ravelry

When the Spring 2009 issue of Knitty came out I thought that the Shipwreck Shawl was nice but not something for me. I wasn't sure how to wear a circular shawl, the pattern was really lovely but at the same time a bit to sea oriented for my taste. Fast forward a few months and hanging around the Lost group's KAL on Ravelry I started going back to Knitty to look at the shawl. I began to see shawls knit by others which in turn made me go back and look and wonder what colors this shawl would look good in. I began surfing around for beads, and putting color combinations in me head. It was when I actually had a dream about the shawl that I decided that it was time to stop thinking and start knitting.



I have only used beads in one or two of my projects and never realized how much bigger size 6 beads are than size 8. I really loved the colors of the size 6 but the weight alone for the amount of beads, over 5000, would make the shawl unmanageable. I was able to find some pretty green, blue and gold beads at a local bead store in size 8 which was much much better.



Of course since I've completed 4 shawls this year I was completely full of myself and decided that I did not need to mark what row I was on and do the modification to make the leaves symmetrical by simply 'reading' my knitting. Well the knitting gods exacted their payback and I had to rip out seventeen rows.



One and a half months later I finished my shawl just in time to wear it to a wedding. Our friends were married on Sunday July 12 and the shawl was blocked and dried by 11 pm on the 11th. I love everything about this shawl. If it wasn't for Ravelry and the Lost KAL I wouldn't have made this wonderful shawl!
